- Description: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is well described from a biomedical perspective, which is consistent with the typical pharmacological treatment approach. Measures of improvement are for the most part based on the scholastic performance. However, a child’s wellness is not only limited to academic performance, but also involves their functioning outside of the learning environment. It is therefore important to explore alternative measures of social and emotional wellness to support the biomedical treatment of a child. This study explored parental perceptions related to the social and emotional wellness of a diagnosed child, using principles of wellness put forward by Roscoe (2009). It took an instrumental case study approach using a semi-structured interview to gather data with a single participant. The participant is the parent of a child diagnosed with ADHD and was selected through non-probability purposive sampling. Data collection and analysis followed Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s (2020) data analysis method. Lincoln and Guba’s (1985) model of trustworthiness was used to ensure the integrity of the study. Findings confirmed the prioritisation of academic wellness above that of social and emotional wellness. Parental emotional intelligence is vital to the child’s social and emotional wellness. Parental investment into the child’s exploration of self may further contribute to a positive, realistic and development sense of self which fosters resilience. - Description: Globally people are growing older, and nearly every country is experiencing an increase in their ageing populace. In 1960 older people made up 5 % of the world population, while in 2018, they were about 9% of the overall population. Projections are that in 2050 people over the age of 65 will make up 16% of the overall population. To respond to an ageing population, a government must ensure that its policy framework can respond to the needs of its citizens. A society that supports a positive ageing environment improves older people’s well-being. In our complex society, each person is dependent on others in various ways, and social, emotional and practical interdependence is a feature of the human social condition. This means that older people do not function well in isolation but need support for positive ageing. This research project focused on older people’s perceptions of services that support their positive ageing in the Khayelitsha and Gugulethu districts of the Western Cape, South Africa. The theoretical framework employed in the study is Systems Theory. The research approach utilised in the study is qualitative with an explorative and descriptive research design. A non-probability purposive, criterion-based sampling technique was employed. The researcher recruited eleven older persons aged sixty years and above in the Khayelitsha and Gugulethu areas. An NGO that works with older persons’ served as gatekeepers. Semi-structured telephonic interviews were conducted. The data collected was analysed using thematic data analysis. The trustworthiness of the research process was enhanced using Guba’s model. Ethical principles as set out in the Belmont report were also adhered to. The key findings of the current study indicated that in Khayelitsha and Gugulethu areas, there are available services that support positive ageing, such as clubs, excursions and social grants. Environmental aspects challenging positive ageing included unfavourable home conditions such as financial burden and ill-treatment, poverty and unemployment, health problems, and COVID-19 effects. Older people mentioned that there are available but inadequate services such as municipal services and care facilities. - Description: A. A. Milne was an author that made an impact on the development of children’s literature that continues today. His collection of books, inspired by his own life experiences, has paved the way for the development of recognising individuals that behave in ways that are contrary to societal norms, a topic that had been given little attention before the Winnie the Pooh books were written. These little children’s books were a front runner in the discussion of disabilities and special needs characters in children’s literature and revealed to children that they did not need to be fearful of individuals who were unlike them. Winnie the Pooh books encouraged sensitivity toward those with disabilities and special needs and illustrated how one could show acceptance in a loving and safe environment. The Winnie the Pooh series incorporates captivating and endearing characters with physical or mental aberrations, thus, educating society, enlightening readers and paving the way for literature to incorporate novel characters that have physical barriers or deformities. Each character in the Winnie the Pooh books is unique in his or her own way, displaying various special needs, character ‘flaws’, personalities and disabilities. These special needs characters are depicted honestly and with a wry sense of humour wherein each is accepted despite his or her foibles. This collection of books opposed the norm in children’s literature of shunning differences and disabilities, but addressed this topic in an open, tolerant manner, enabling children around the globe to embrace the characters because of their uniqueness. A. A Milne defied society’s rules and norms and paved the way for child readers to be introduced to individuals with special needs in a fresh, inviting way, encouraging these young readers to envision affirming experiences in their interactions with special needs individuals. These books endeavoured to positively change perceptions concerning special needs and disabilities. As a result, the Winnie the Pooh books have altered mind-sets and inspired this topic to be brought to the forefront. This project seeks to provide an exploration of special needs within the characters of the Winnie the Pooh collection of books authored by A.A Milne, as well as the contemporary renditions of these books authored by David Benedictus, by analysing the characters through a psychoanalytical lens, as well as providing an extensive examination through the medical and social theories of disability. Thus, the study will provide a thorough, text-based literary analysis by discussing three main areas regarding the topic of special needs in Winnie the Pooh. The three focal areas in this study are as follows: firstly, to analyse the manner in which special needs or disabilities had been previously addressed and depicted in children’s literature; secondly, to identify the special needs traits in each of the Winnie the Pooh characters and examine how each of them are depicted or portrayed in the books written by A. A. Milne and David Benedictus; and thirdly, to examine what the other characters do to illustrate their acceptance of the special needs characters and consider how these books can be used as a tool in bibliotherapy. - Description: This work focuses on the design, synthesis and evaluation of imine-containing heterocyclic and acyclic compounds with special focus on their bioactivity against parasitic protozoans (P. falciparum and T. brucei) - given the context of drug resistance in the treatment of malaria and Human African sleeping sickness and the fact that several bioactive organic compounds have been reported to possess the imino group. Starting from 2-aminopyridine, novel #-alkylated-5-bromo-7-azabenzimidazoles and substituted 5-bromo-1-(carbamoylmethy)-7-azabenzimidazole derivatives were prepared, and their bioactivity against parasitic protozoans was assessed. NMR spectra of the substituted 5- bromo-1-(carbamoylmethy)-7-azabenzimidazole derivatives exhibited rotational isomerism, and a dynamic NMR study was used in the estimation of the rate constants and the free- energies of activation for rotation. The free-energy differences between the two rotamers were determined and the more stable conformations were predicted. Novel 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazoles were also synthesised from 2-aminopyridine. A convenient method for the regioselective formylation of 2,3-diaminopyridines into 2-amino- 7-(benzylimino)pyridine analogues of 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazole was developed, and some of the resulting imino derivatives were hydrogenated to verify the importance of the imino moiety for bioactivity. The 2-phenyl-7-azabenzimidazoles and the 2-amino-7- (benzylimino)pyridine analogues were screened for their anti-protozoal activity and their cytotoxicity level was determined against the HeLa cell line. In order to validate the importance of the pyridine moiety, novel #-(phenyl)-2- hydroxybenzylimines, #-(benzyl)-2-hydroxybenzylimines and (±)-trans-1,2-bis[2- hydroxybenzylimino]cyclohexanes were also synthesized and screened for activity against the parasitic protozoans and for cytotoxicity against the HeLa cell line. In order to validate the importance of the pyridine moiety, novel #-(phenyl)-2- hydroxybenzylimines, #-(benzyl)-2-hydroxybenzylimines and (±)-trans-1,2-bis[2- hydroxybenzylimino]cyclohexanes were also synthesized and screened for activity against the parasitic protozoans and for cytotoxicity against the HeLa cell line. The biological assay results indicated that these compounds are not significantly cytotoxic and a good number of them show potential as lead compounds for the development of new malaria and trypanosomiasis drugs. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Chemistry, 2018
