  • Description: This group of "Amakwenkwe" (young unitiated men) all wrapped in red blankets, carrying sticks and wearing bead leggings, sang very well with gravity and intersity. They were all under 18 years of age. In the interval between the songs, they went off to fetch their sticks and struck them together during the song to mark the rhythm. Three group fighting song, with sticks and whistles.

  • Description: These recordings were made at the "Great Place", of Chief Botha, Paramount Chief of the Mpondo. This large group of Izangoma followers both men and women, was composed of a mixture of Sotho and Mpondo, led by Khotso Sethuntsa. Chief Botha Marzolwandle Sigcau Paku is his full name. "The Great Place" is the name given throughout the Xhosa territories to the chief's headquarters. Khotso-Sethuntsa, name of the chief Sangoma, a man who comes from Kokstad and is a Sotho himself. He is a notable character, reputed to be extremely wealthy, and has much influence in the neighbourhood. Divination song sung at night, with clapping and 5 drums

The married women were more soberly dressed than the young unmarried ones and wore their headclothes in the more usual Xhosa 'pile' of cloth on the head, producing a large loose turban-like effect. The speech was delivered to a gathering of his people men and women, seated on the short grass, with their ponies grazing peacefully in the background and the hot afternoon sunshine shining on the wide expanse of hills and grassy slopes beyond. In the course of the speech he made great play with his stick, which was covered with a leopard's tail.

They wore their hair in many fine plaits hanging on either side of the face. Over this was worn the tubular bead headring or headband, (if the girl was unmarried) mostly in pale blue and white beads, many strands of sky blue and white beads wound about their necks to form choker collars. "The song was chanted by Ntsikana regularly at dawn of day, standing at his hut door, summoning the people to morning prayer. As people gathered they joined in the strains, adding different parts. Extracts taken from the songbook "Amaculo ase Lovedale.", published by the Lovedale Press.- It is notable that Ntsikana had never heard a church bell. The tune is of African origin.
